Brussels: (RightNow) The European Union has fined Chinese online platform AliExpress €550 million. EU officials state that AliExpress failed to take effective measures to stop the sale of illegal and unsafe products.

Investigations reveal that many products sold on AliExpress did not meet EU safety standards. These include unsafe children’s toys and cosmetics.

EU Technology Affairs Chief, Hanna Workonen, emphasized that online shopping safety is the responsibility of platforms. She added that all major digital platforms must identify and effectively address potential risks.

This fine is imposed under the EU’s Digital Services Act, which holds large tech companies accountable for consumer protection. This law was enacted in 2022.

It is noteworthy that AliExpress has called this decision disproportionate and plans to appeal. The company claims to have implemented several reforms for consumer protection.
