Kathmandu: (RightNow) A glacier lake burst on the Nepal-Tibet border has caused widespread devastation. Approximately 1500 people are missing, including 800 foreigners. Authorities fear the death toll may exceed 165.

The disaster occurred on Wednesday morning when a massive flow of ice, rocks, and mud descended. It affected several towns in its path. Hydropower projects, bridges, roads, and security checkpoints were also hit by the flood.

Authorities and experts are assessing the origin of the avalanche on the mountain. The disaster began from Langtang Lirung, which is about 7,234 meters high and located 45 kilometers north of the capital, Kathmandu.

It is important to note that the risk of glacier lake outburst floods in the Himalayas is increasing. Climate change is a major factor, causing glaciers to melt and form lakes.

Glacial lake bursts in the Himalayas have caused destruction multiple times. A similar incident occurred in India’s Sikkim state in 2023. These events lead to economic losses in the affected regions.
