Islamabad: (RightNow) The federal government is considering a tax exemption for importing 1 million metric tons of wheat. The Ministry of National Food Security has proposed this to address the wheat shortage in the country.

Sources indicate that the proposal includes exemption from the Provincial Infrastructure Development Cess. PASCO has offered to supply 1 million tons of wheat from its reserves to the provinces.

After utilizing PASCO’s wheat, the remaining needs will be met through imports. The cost of PASCO’s wheat is estimated at 141 billion rupees, while the import cost is projected at $340 million.

Provinces have reported a decrease in their wheat reserves. The ECC has formed a steering committee led by the Deputy Prime Minister.

It is noteworthy that due to increased wheat demand in Pakistan, the government has decided to boost imports.
