Islamabad: (RightNow) Details of electricity production costs across the country were presented in the Senate. The documents included figures on plant costs and government payments.

According to the documents presented in the Senate, electricity from WAPDA dams costs Rs 2.70 per unit, while private IPPs exceed Rs 34 per unit.

The government paid WAPDA Rs 186 billion for 34.5 billion units, while Rs 1040 billion was transferred to private IPPs for 49.8 billion units. Additionally, over Rs 1300 billion was paid to IPPs as capacity charges this fiscal year.

The Tarbela Hydel Power Project is the cheapest source, producing electricity at Rs 2.70 per unit, while Mangla provides it at Rs 3.75 per unit. The overall average cost for all dams is recorded at Rs 5.39 per unit.

It is noteworthy that electricity from Chashma Nuclear Power Plant is provided at Rs 6.76 per unit, and from local Thar coal at Rs 19.03 per unit, while imported coal plants Sahiwal Coal and Port Qasim have costs reaching Rs 34.17 and Rs 32.16 per unit, respectively.
