Washington: (RightNow) The United States has approved the sale of 48 advanced F-35 Lightning II fighter jets to Saudi Arabia. The defense deal is valued at $24.3 billion.

According to the US State Department, the package includes 48 F-35 jets, 49 engines, and other equipment. It also comprises communication systems, spare parts, training equipment, and simulators.

However, the deal requires approval from the US Congress to be finalized. These jets are equipped with stealth technology, and no other country in the region, except Israel, operates them.

The agreement will enhance Saudi Arabia’s defense capabilities and strengthen cooperation with US and allied forces. Washington states that this will not alter the military balance in the region.

It is noteworthy that Saudi Arabia has long been interested in acquiring F-35 jets and has increased cooperation with the US to modernize its air force.
