Budapest: (RightNow) Hungary’s parliament has lifted the immunity of Prime Minister Peter Magyar and three lawmakers. This move aims to facilitate investigations into allegations of phone snatching against the Prime Minister. The resolution passed with 139 votes.

In June 2024, the incident occurred when Magyar was a member of the European Parliament. A confrontation ensued at a Budapest nightclub while a person was recording a video. Magyar allegedly snatched the phone and threw it into the Danube River, later retrieved by divers.

Hungarian prosecutors requested the lifting of immunity from the European Parliament in 2024, which was not granted. After becoming a member of Hungary’s parliament in May 2026, Magyar regained immunity, prompting a new request to lift it locally.

Peter Magyar himself supported the lifting of his immunity. He stated he committed no crime and wishes to clarify the matter in court. Prosecutors believe the legal path for investigation is now open.

It should be noted that the parliament also lifted the immunity of two former ministers. This decision is part of investigations into alleged corruption during the previous government. Lifting immunity does not imply guilt.
