Karachi: (RightNow) Experts at an international conference in Karachi have warned that amputations for diabetic patients can be life-threatening. According to experts, nearly half of the patients in Pakistan die within three years.

The conference revealed that the mortality rate after amputations in diabetic patients is higher than some cancers. Dr. Fahad Tariq stated that over 40% of patients die within five years after a ‘minor amputation’.

Experts say diabetic patients commonly suffer from Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) and other serious conditions, increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

It is noteworthy that annually, three lakh people in Pakistan are forced to undergo leg or foot amputations due to diabetes complications. Timely diagnosis and treatment can save such patients.

Professor Zahid Mian has launched a 24-hour helpline for immediate medical guidance for patients. He also announced a two-year postgraduate diploma for treating diabetic wounds.
