China has developed a local defense system using US AI models, potentially bypassing US export restrictions.
Beijing: (RightNow) China has developed a local defense system using US AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic. According to a British news agency report, Chinese military institutions are converting these models into compact AI systems.
These systems can operate locally without requiring significant computing power. The report reveals that the People’s Liberation Army is using model distillation techniques, as disclosed in Chinese papers.
Through model distillation, smaller models are created from the results of powerful models. US officials have stated that these capabilities could render US export restrictions ineffective.
The system developed through model distillation at China’s National University of Defense Technology is installed on drones for route navigation. It is important to note that China has denied these allegations, emphasizing its research-based technology.
It should be remembered that the US has imposed technology export restrictions to limit China’s AI capabilities, but China is attempting to overcome them through its strategies.
