Black carbon pollution from fossil fuels in Lahore has more than doubled, posing a health risk.
Lahore: (RightNow) Black carbon pollution from fossil fuels has more than doubled in Lahore. The total black carbon concentration in the city is recorded at 3.82 micrograms per cubic meter.
This revelation comes from a PM 2.5 source apportionment study conducted by the Department of Environmental Protection and Climate Change in collaboration with SUPARCO. According to the study, black carbon from fossil fuels measures 2.58 micrograms per cubic meter.
Black carbon from biomass burning is recorded at 1.24 micrograms per cubic meter. The study was conducted in Lahore from August 15 to 31, 2026, aiming to identify major sources of black carbon.
Experts warn that the ultra-fine particles in black carbon can be harmful to human health. These particles may cause respiratory issues, heart diseases, and other health problems.
It is noteworthy that the highest concentration of black carbon was recorded on August 30, at 3.82 micrograms per cubic meter. These figures are crucial for air pollution prevention efforts.
