Karachi: (RightNow) Fire safety lapses have been uncovered at the National Institute of Child Health. Emergency exits are closed and fire extinguishers are faulty.
Sources reveal that fire extinguishers have not been tested, and the fire alarm system is ineffective. Doctors and nurses have not received fire safety training for 10 years.
Director of NICH, Dr. Nasir Suddle, stated that emergency exits are closed for security reasons due to past thefts, but staff have keys to these doors.
He further mentioned that if an unfortunate incident occurs, the staff will be held responsible. Fire extinguishers are available, but staff lack firefighting training.
It is noteworthy that two major fire incidents have occurred at NICH in the past 6 years, yet fire safety has not been prioritized.
