Lahore: (RightNow) The Sugar Mills Association has rejected the government’s proposal to export 200,000 metric tons of sugar. They demand immediate permission to export 1 million metric tons.

During a meeting in Lahore, the association’s advisory board stated that the sugar industry should be fully deregulated by the government. The board claims that over 2.6 million tons of sugar stock is available in the country.

According to the spokesperson, the Ministry of Food Security did not consider the sugar mills’ stance. The average monthly sugar consumption is 560,000 metric tons, and permission to export 1 million metric tons is necessary.

With the start of the new crushing season, approximately 1.25 million metric tons of additional sugar will be available. Therefore, the advisory board has urged the government to fully deregulate the sugar industry.

It is noteworthy that the need for increased export permission by sugar mills is linked to the surplus sugar stock in the country.
