Lahore: (RightNow) Urban expansion in major cities of Punjab has led to an increase in snake-human encounters. In the first 8 months of this year, 1070 snakebite incidents were reported, resulting in 6 fatalities.

According to Punjab Emergency Services, 614 men and 446 women were affected by snakebites. Immediate medical aid was provided to 64 individuals, while 990 were transferred to hospitals.

In Dera Ghazi Khan, 164 incidents were reported, with 1 resulting in death. Several other cities also reported multiple snakebite cases.

Experts state that urban expansion, pesticide use, and food scarcity contribute to the rise in snake numbers. Protecting natural habitats and public awareness are crucial.

It is noteworthy that according to the World Health Organization, over 4.5 million people are bitten by snakes annually worldwide, with an estimated 40 thousand incidents in Pakistan.
