Islamabad: (RightNow) The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has decided to block WhatsApp accounts linked to inactive, canceled, or unused SIMs. PTA stated that many WhatsApp accounts on inactive numbers are being used for fraud and illegal activities.

The authority clarified that this action can commence at any time, urging users to link their accounts to active numbers. PTA conducted an awareness campaign for several weeks to inform users about the importance of SIM registration and activation.

In this campaign, users were advised to verify inactive or unregistered SIMs promptly to protect themselves from fraud. PTA suggested using the ‘Change Number’ option in WhatsApp to maintain account control.

This initiative aims to prevent fraud and enhance digital security. Overseas Pakistanis who have not transferred their WhatsApp accounts to other SIMs may also be affected.

Previously, PTA had advised users about issues with WhatsApp accounts linked to inactive numbers and recommended necessary actions.
