Damascus: (RightNow) Syria’s former Grand Mufti Sheikh Ahmed has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a criminal court. The court accused Sheikh Ahmed Badr al-Din Hassoun of supporting ousted President Bashar al-Assad.

According to the court, Sheikh Ahmed also faced serious charges of inciting sectarian riots. Arab media reported that he was accused of being a loyal leader to Bashar al-Assad.

Sheikh Ahmed Badr al-Din served as Syria’s Grand Mufti from 2005 to 2021. He was considered among the loyal leaders during Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

The significance of this verdict is that Syrian courts have sentenced 10 figures so far, highlighting the intensity of judicial proceedings in the country.

It is noteworthy that Sheikh Ahmed Badr al-Din was known as an important religious leader during Bashar al-Assad’s rule. His arrest was due to various allegations against him.
