Dubai: (RightNow) The Dubai government has implemented a new law to curb illegal shared housing. Violators will face fines up to 1 million dirhams.

The law, issued by Vice President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, applies to all residential areas in Dubai, except labor colonies.

Under the law, only property owners and licensed entities can sublet approved units. Tenants are not allowed to sublet any part of the property.

The government will take strict legal action against violators, with fines ranging from 500 to 500,000 dirhams. Repeat offenses may result in doubled fines.

It is noteworthy that the government has given current property owners a one-year grace period to comply with the new rules, with the option for extension by the Director General of Dubai Municipality.
