A study finds excessive artificial sweeteners may harm brain health, especially in those under 60.
New York: (RightNow) A new study reveals that excessive use of artificial sweeteners can affect memory and cognitive abilities. These ingredients are commonly used as sugar substitutes, but their effects can be dangerous for brain health.
The study, published in the Journal of the American Academy of Neurology, monitored 13,000 adults over eight years. It examined seven common artificial sweeteners, including aspartame and saccharin.
According to the research, individuals consuming 191 milligrams of artificial sweeteners daily experienced a 62% faster rate of memory decline. Those with moderate consumption faced a 35% higher risk.
These results were more pronounced in individuals under 60 and those with diabetes. Researchers noted that artificial sweeteners are typically used as sugar alternatives.
It is important to note that the study found no link between tagatose and rapid cognitive decline. Researchers emphasized the need for further investigation.
