Jakarta: (RightNow) A 7.7 magnitude earthquake has struck near the northern coast of Indonesia. A tsunami warning has been issued.

According to the US Geological Survey, aftershocks of 5.9, 5.6, and 6.1 magnitudes followed the earthquake. The quake occurred at 4:58 AM at a depth of 35 kilometers.

Indonesia’s Meteorological Agency has advised citizens to stay away from the coasts. Residents in affected areas have been instructed to move to higher ground.

Initial estimates suggest approximately 5 lakh people have been affected by the earthquake. The Indonesian government has not confirmed any casualties or damage yet.

It is noteworthy that Indonesia is located on the Ring of Fire, where earthquakes and volcanic activities are common.
