Islamabad: (RightNow) Sugar mill owners have written again to Minister for Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain, requesting immediate permission to export surplus sugar. As of July 31, the stock stands at 3.1 million metric tons, and they seek approval to export 633,000 tons immediately.

According to the letter, the country’s average monthly consumption is 564,196 metric tons. Sugar mill owners claim that by the start of the next crushing season, there will be an excess stock of 1.197 million metric tons.

The sugar industry faces the challenge of maintaining large sugar reserves. Mills are experiencing a shortage of funds, and the surplus stock needs to be exported within a month of the crushing season’s start.

This issue is significant for the national economy, as maintaining surplus sugar reserves could exacerbate financial difficulties.

It is noteworthy that the sugar industry anticipates a bumper crop of sugarcane each year, leading to increased sugar production.
