Mariano Navone defeated the 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic in a grueling five-set match. This was Djokovic’s longest match in the early rounds of a Grand Slam.
Djokovic faced physical challenges, experiencing a left foot strain and nausea. He received medication from doctors and had his back massaged during the match.
This defeat is significant for Djokovic as it marks the first time in two decades he has exited a Grand Slam in the first round. It is also his first loss in the opening round of the US Open.
