Mumbai: (RightNow) The implementation of Marathi language proficiency tests has begun in Mumbai. Auto and taxi drivers are being tested for their ability to speak Marathi, causing difficulties for passengers.

Due to the RTO’s (Regional Transport Office) testing, there is a shortage of taxis and rickshaws in the city. Drivers have initiated a three-day strike, delaying passengers on their way to offices.

The Maharashtra government has amended the law to make knowledge of Marathi mandatory. Drivers who do not know Marathi are being given a one-month grace period.

Officials state that this measure is for passenger convenience and to respect local culture. Drivers argue that questions outside the syllabus are being asked during the tests.

It is noteworthy that most drivers come from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. They usually communicate with Hindi-speaking passengers in Hindi. Drivers are requesting more time to learn the language.
