United States: (RightNow) Two American Airlines planes with the same flight number nearly collided mid-air. Quick action by air traffic control averted the potential disaster.

Flight number 2482 had one plane traveling from Chicago to Phoenix, while the other had just departed Phoenix. Both planes shared the same call sign, causing confusion in instructions.

The controller identified the situation and assigned separate identities to the planes, securing their flight paths. The incoming plane was kept at a higher altitude, while the other was prevented from ascending.

This successful intervention ensured both planes avoided collision and continued safely to their destinations. The controller stated it was the first such incident in their 25-year career.

It is noteworthy that the flight from Chicago was delayed due to weather, while another aircraft was used for the Phoenix departure. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration will review the incident.
