Peshawar: (RightNow) The Peshawar High Court has upheld the government’s decision to end free electricity units for WAPDA employees, declaring it legal. The court dismissed the petitions, stating the decision was made within legal boundaries.

The court clarified that free electricity units were not a permanent legal right but an administrative concession, which can be altered in the national interest. The caretaker government’s move is deemed necessary for administrative improvement.

The court stated that this change does not violate Articles 4 and 25 of the Constitution but is an economic reform. The court instructed relevant authorities to ensure transparent and fair implementation of the policy.

According to the decision, this move strengthens the legal status of the policy with the support of the elected government to maintain policy continuity. The court declared the policy to be in the national interest.

It is noteworthy that in April 2026, the government ended the free electricity units for power sector employees to provide relief to the public from load shedding.
