Toronto: (RightNow) During the FIFA World Cup, 175 individuals have filed for asylum in Canada. These individuals hail from various countries and had obtained visas for matches held in Toronto and Vancouver.

The Canadian government issued 26,000 visas during the FIFA World Cup, half of which were rejected. Thirteen matches were played in Toronto and Vancouver, attracting thousands of attendees.

The 175 individuals who arrived in Canada have filed asylum requests, which will be reviewed under Canadian refugee laws. Authorities have not disclosed details about the applicants.

This issue is significant as the increase in asylum requests could impact Canada’s immigration policy. Canadian officials had previously warned about this possibility.

It is noteworthy that 25 individuals from Ghana and 15 each from Egypt and Colombia have applied for asylum. An increase in these numbers is also anticipated.
