Pakistan plans to implement a uniform gas tariff with IMF approval, aiding low-income households.
Islamabad: (RightNow) The government decides to implement a uniform gas tariff across the country, seeking approval from the IMF. This decision will take effect from July 1, 2027.
The government needs to allocate Rs 162 billion for low-income households to eliminate the current cross-subsidy system. The existing tariff system with 12 slabs will also be abolished under this initiative.
Sources reveal that a proposal to replace gas subsidies with income-based subsidies is under consideration. The suggestion is to use income as the relief criterion instead of gas consumption.
This move aligns with Pakistan’s commitment to the IMF to eliminate cross-subsidies. Financial assistance will be provided to consumers through the Benazir Income Support Program.
It is noteworthy that the current system offers lower rates to consumers with low usage. The new policy is expected to increase rates for domestic consumers while reducing them for the industrial sector.
