Islamabad: (RightNow) The Government of Pakistan is considering revising the current method of measuring poverty. Consultations are ongoing between the Ministry of Planning and Oxford University’s institution.

The proposed new method will include factors such as health, education, quality of life, population pressure, and climate effects. Additionally, factors like insecurity and malnutrition are also being considered.

The Federal Minister of Planning stated that political instability and economic crises have affected development progress. He further emphasized the need for investment in social sectors to reduce poverty.

It is clear that the new poverty measurement will use data from the 2026-27 Pakistan Social and Living Standards Measurement Survey. The government has decided not to disclose this data to the public.

Remember, including new factors in poverty measurement will help identify deprived populations and enable better allocation of developmental resources.
