Washington: (RightNow) Technology company Meta has agreed to a historic $18 billion settlement with attorneys general from 48 U.S. states.
According to U.S. media, this settlement resolves a major federal lawsuit concerning the harms of social media on children. It marks a new era of legal responsibilities for tech companies.
Under the settlement, Meta will introduce significant changes to its services, Facebook and Instagram. These include automatically setting a 2-hour usage limit for users under 18.
A unique condition of the agreement requires Meta to pay 70% of the settlement amount, with the remaining 30% contingent on TikTok and YouTube setting a 1-hour daily limit for younger users.
It is noteworthy that 48 U.S. states and 4 U.S. territories are part of this agreement, while New Mexico and Florida are not included.
