Dhaka: (RightNow) A Bangladeshi military officer has been detained for the alleged extrajudicial killing of a politician during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure.

The incident occurred in 2018 during Hasina Wajid’s anti-drug campaign, which resulted in hundreds of deaths. Many of these fatalities were reportedly due to alleged fake encounters by security forces.

The Bangladeshi Crime Tribunal has accepted a petition against 11 officials in the murder case of Cox’s Bazar Councillor Akramul Haque. The accused include former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and several police and military officers.

Local media reported that Brigadier General Miftahuddin Ahmed was taken into custody by the Bangladeshi military. The arrest was confirmed by the military’s public relations department.

It is noteworthy that his arrest is considered one of the significant legal actions during Sheikh Hasina’s administration, part of the tribunal’s efforts against government actions.
