Islamabad: (RightNow) Energy Minister Owais Ahmed Khan Leghari announces the government’s complete exit from electricity procurement. No one will sell electricity to the government, nor will the government purchase it.

He states that providing affordable electricity to the public is a priority. In the next five years, 800 megawatts of electricity will be auctioned. In the first phase, 400 megawatts will be offered for auction.

Owais Leghari mentions that the current electricity procurement system has faced public scrutiny. Now, industries and factories will be able to purchase electricity on a competitive basis.

He further adds that the new electricity trading system will be based on transparency. It will initially apply to industrial or large consumers.

It is noteworthy that the government previously purchased electricity and sold it to the public at set rates. Now, ordinary consumers can buy electricity at their discretion, enhancing the industry’s global competitiveness.
