Australia: (RightNow) According to Australia’s Intergenerational Report 2026, death rates are expected to surpass birth rates by the 2060s. This marks the first time such a projection has been made in Australia’s official long-term forecasts.

The report highlights declining birth rates and an aging population as key factors. The overall birth rate is expected to drop to approximately 1.34 children per woman by 2065-66.

The government states that immigration will remain a crucial source of population growth. The number of Australians aged 85 and over is projected to nearly triple by 2065-66.

This shift is likely to increase pressure on healthcare, elder care, and the workforce. Without immigration, a natural population decline may occur.

It is noteworthy that by March 2026, Australia recorded approximately 292,500 births and 191,900 deaths in one year.
