Karachi: (RightNow) Jamaat-e-Islami has initiated a nationwide strike against the increase in petroleum product prices and levy tax. Markets and shops are completely closed in Karachi and various other cities.

According to Jamaat-e-Islami, they have full support from traders, with protests ongoing in Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad. The strike call was given by Jamaat-e-Islami leader Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman.

Unpleasant incidents have been reported in some areas of Karachi. Unknown individuals set up roadblocks in Korangi. Police responded promptly and deployed forces in the area.

The Chief Minister of Sindh has taken notice of the situation and ordered the IG Police to investigate. Instructions have been given for indiscriminate action against miscreants.

It is noteworthy that Jamaat-e-Islami began protest sit-ins against the petroleum levy on August 15. The strike was announced after 18 days. Negotiations between Jamaat-e-Islami and the government are expected today.
