Lahore: (RightNow) WAPDA has initiated a feasibility study for constructing four new dams on the Chenab River. The purpose of these dams is to store water from monsoon rains and floodwaters.

The total storage capacity of these four dams is 4.5 million acre-feet. The estimated construction cost is Rs 298 billion. These dams will be built in Wazirabad, Midh Ranjha, Chiniot, and Shah Jeewna.

The Sindh government has requested WAPDA for the feasibility study, PC-1 documents, and hydrological data details of these dams. Sindh has also demanded comprehensive information on environmental impacts.

WAPDA has expressed readiness to share available studies and information with Sindh. The Sindh government has clarified that a final opinion is not possible without assessing the impacts of water projects.

It is noteworthy that after the completion of Diamer Bhasha and Mohmand Dams, the need for water below Kotri will further decrease. The Sindh government states that 2022 and 2025 were exceptionally flood-prone years.
