Lahore: (RightNow) The Federal Ministry of Production has permitted the export of expensive imported sugar at a lower price. This decision is likely to cause a loss of billions to the national treasury. The decision to export 2.5 lakh tons of local cheap sugar remains pending.

Sources from the Ministry of Production have stated that the decision to export 1 lakh tons of sugar is disappointing. This decision may lead to difficulties in purchasing sugarcane crops from farmers.

Sugar mill owners have informed the Ministry of Production in advance that purchasing sugarcane will not be feasible. Following the government’s decision to export sugar, local market prices are expected to remain stable.

Rana Tanveer has stated that the export of sugar is not expected to increase local market prices. According to the Ministry of Finance, the sugar export will be conducted under international tendering and PPRA regulations.

It is noteworthy that last year, the government faced criticism regarding sugar exports. The increase in sugar prices had caused unrest among consumers.
