India: (RightNow) An Indian high court has sentenced renowned journalist Tarun Tejpal to 10 years in prison for a sexual assault case. The verdict was delivered by the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court, convicting him of charges of sexual assault and harassment.

The court also imposed a fine exceeding 1 million rupees on Tejpal. The case began in 2013 when a female journalist accused him of sexual harassment during the Tehelka conference.

Following the verdict, Tejpal called it a political vendetta and announced plans to appeal to the Supreme Court. He stated his intention to challenge the decision in his defense.

This case is significant for women’s rights, as the court aimed to send a clear message to society about respecting women’s right to say ‘no.’

It is noteworthy that Tarun Tejpal founded Tehelka magazine, known for its investigative journalism. The magazine conducted several important sting operations that had a profound impact on Indian politics.
