Chinese scientists identify Tryptamine, a natural molecule enhancing sleep desire, aiding new drug development.
Beijing: (RightNow) Chinese scientists have identified a natural molecule that enhances the desire for sleep in the brain. This discovery could play a crucial role in the development of new medications.
According to the research, the molecule named ‘Tryptamine’ signals the brain that the body needs rest. This study has been published in Nature Neuroscience.
Researchers state that the brain performs essential functions during sleep, but insomnia deprives people of adequate rest.
Experiments conducted on mice and pigs assessed the levels of Tryptamine. Results showed that prolonged wakefulness increases this molecule.
It is noteworthy that this biological system may be common among various mammals, and if proven in humans, new medications could be developed.
