Islamabad: (RightNow) After a fire incident at PIMS Hospital, newborns at Karachi’s NICU face fire safety risks. It has been revealed that welding occurred in the nursery while babies were present.

Video footage from NICU shows welding in the nursery with several newborns on beds. Sources indicate 80 to 120 babies were under treatment, most on oxygen.

Experts have deemed the welding process dangerous. Sparks near oxygen during welding can cause fires. Safety measures during repairs are under scrutiny.

A fire safety audit labeled several NICU floors as hazardous. The audit report found the fire alarm system inactive and smoke detectors faulty.

It is noteworthy that NICU has faced fire incidents in the past. In 2020, a fire in an incubator resulted in a newborn’s death. The fire safety audit recommended addressing deficiencies.
