Paris: (RightNow) The European Union proposes a ban on social media use for children under 13. Limited use until age 15 is allowed with parental oversight.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen presented these proposals to the European Parliament. The aim is to protect children from features that encourage prolonged platform use.

Reports indicate over 20 countries have taken steps to limit children’s social media use. Australia banned it for those under 16 by the end of 2025.

In Brazil, accounts of users under 16 are linked to parental accounts. China has also imposed various restrictions on young people’s social media use.

It is important to note that the EU’s proposal is not yet a final law. Further deliberation and legal and political processes among member states are ongoing.
