Lahore: (RightNow) The Lahore High Court has granted post-arrest bail to Dr. Iftikhar Ahmed, a Parkinson’s patient. The doctor was arrested on allegations of medical negligence during a child’s circumcision.

The court stated that physical weakness and illness can be valid legal grounds for bail. According to the jail medical report, Dr. Ahmed suffers from Parkinson’s, a neurological disorder, making daily tasks challenging.

Justice Amjad Rafiq emphasized that weakness is not limited to illness but includes the inability to endure prison hardships. The court ordered consideration of human dignity, equality, and proportionality principles.

This decision is significant for human rights and prison conditions, where poor food quality and overcrowding can worsen inmates’ health. The court stated that justice demands protecting vulnerable prisoners from unnecessary suffering.

It is noteworthy that Dr. Iftikhar Ahmed faced allegations of medical negligence, and the court ordered his release on bail against a bond of 1 million rupees. The court instructed that the accused must not influence evidence and must submit his passport.
