Islamabad: (RightNow) Power distribution companies are found involved in Rs 47 billion overbilling. This overbilling was done to cover electricity theft and line losses.

Approximately 278,649 consumers received inflated bills in one month. Lahore Electric Supply Company accounted for Rs 45 billion, while Peshawar Company overbilled Rs 1.56 billion.

The Secretary of the Power Division stated that smart meters and transformer-based metering systems are being installed to address this issue.

To control overbilling, companies have significantly reduced electricity theft with the help of Rangers.

It is noteworthy that Hyderabad Company was also involved in embezzling Rs 1.06 billion through payments to fake employees.
