Islamabad: (RightNow) The government has decided to implement a uniform gas tariff by eliminating the existing 12 slabs. This move aims to ensure simplicity and transparency in billing for gas consumers.

Protected consumers will be shifted to income-based subsidies, ensuring that subsidies reach only the deserving individuals through targeted support.

During the IMF’s fourth review from September to October 2026, discussions will be held between the government and the fund regarding the elimination of cross-subsidies and the implementation of a single gas tariff. The timeline for its implementation will also be considered.

These changes in gas tariffs will positively impact the economy and make the subsidy system more efficient. This initiative will reduce the burden on government finances and provide better facilities to the public.

It is noteworthy that the 12-slab gas tariff system has been in place in Pakistan for a long time, causing complexity for consumers. Under this new system, the government has adopted a simple and logical approach.
