Islamabad: (RightNow) The Supreme Court has upheld Wasim Abbas’s sentence while affirming women’s constitutional right to divorce. The court stated that violence against women is an attack on the constitution and dismissed the convict’s jail petition.

The decision was written by Justice Muhammad Hashim Khan Kakakhel, stating that the law will strictly deal with those who abuse women seeking divorce. The court emphasized that Articles 9, 14, and 25 of the constitution guarantee women protection and equal rights.

According to the court, testimonies from relatives in domestic crimes cannot be disregarded. Forensic evidence is undeniable proof of the crime, and no error was found in the lower courts’ decisions.

It is noteworthy that Wasim Abbas murdered his ex-wife, Shahnaz Bibi, on October 11, 2020. The woman had obtained a divorce decree and was killed within 48 hours.

The trial court sentenced the accused to death and 10 years imprisonment, which was upheld by the Lahore High Court.
