Islamabad: (RightNow) Federal Energy Minister Owais Khan Leghari states that Pakistan faces a challenge not in electricity production but in its efficient use and storage. He made this statement at the Solar, Storage, and Flexibility 2026 Conference.

The Energy Minister highlighted that the country’s solar power capacity has reached 38 thousand megawatts. However, most electricity is generated during the day, while demand increases in the evening. Battery energy storage systems are essential for electricity distribution and grid stability.

He further mentioned that reliance on imported fuel poses a risk to the economy. Load shedding occurred at night due to disrupted RLNG supply from Qatar. The government plans to increase the share of clean energy to 90% by 2035.

It is clear that the 90% clean energy target cannot be achieved without battery storage. The government is promoting local battery manufacturing and focusing on developing the battery energy storage industry.

It should be noted that the government has established a National Steering Committee for Battery Energy Storage Systems. Pilot projects have been approved, which will form the basis of future regulatory policy.
