Islamabad: (RightNow). The Senate Standing Committee on Information has taken a significant step to protect journalists from the PECA Act. The committee has recommended that newspaper matters be handled by the Press Council and TV channel issues by PEMRA.

The committee instructed the NCCIA not to take action on news from newspapers, digital editions, websites, and TV channels. Convener Senator Sarmad Ali stated that complaints should be directed to the Press Council and PEMRA as the relevant forums.

Officials further stated that any legal action against journalists has been halted. An important matter has been referred to the Press Council for examination.

This decision aims to provide legal protection to journalists. It seeks to ensure the free flow of information, which is crucial for democracy.

It is noteworthy that the PECA Act was passed in 2016 to prevent cybercrimes. It has faced criticism for the arrests of journalists under its provisions.
