Lahore: (RightNow) PEMRA’s Director General Ayesha Manzoor Wattoo has announced the commencement of social media regulation today. She stated that digital media is now a significant sector, not just an extension of electronic media.

Speaking at a seminar in Lahore, the DG PEMRA emphasized that PEMRA’s responsibility extends beyond just banning content. She mentioned that preventing fake news is also part of PEMRA’s duties.

The Islamabad High Court has sought a response from PEMRA regarding its regulatory jurisdiction over social media. It is important to note that PEMRA’s legal framework is primarily limited to private electronic media.

The significance of PEMRA’s move lies in addressing the spread of false information and harmful content, which has become a major issue. The regulation of social media has been a topic of discussion for some time.

It should be remembered that PEMRA’s current legal structure is confined to broadcast and distribution services. Different bodies and laws already exist for social media.
