Islamabad: (RightNow). Business organizations have joined the movement to make Islamabad a province. The Islamabad Chamber of Commerce has announced a major convention on Friday. Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi will be the chief guest.

The convention will approve a charter for granting Islamabad constitutional status as a federal unit. Elected representatives, bar associations, and trade and industrial organizations’ representatives are invited. There will also be representation from labor, professional organizations, and civil society.

The proposed charter demands Islamabad have its own elected government, assembly, and chief minister. It suggests elections for the assembly and union councils within 120 days. It also demands that taxes and fees collected from Islamabad be given to the ICT government.

The CDA is proposed to be limited to master planning and regulatory authority. The remaining administrative affairs of the CDA are demanded to be transferred to the elected government. Federal authority is suggested to be limited to law and order and master planning.

It is noteworthy that separate development funds for Islamabad’s rural areas are also demanded. These demands are part of the movement for granting provincial status to Islamabad, considered crucial for the city’s development.
