New York: (RightNow) United Nations experts express concern over India’s voter list revisions. They state that the voting rights of Muslims, Bengalis, and other minorities may be negatively affected.

The UN Human Rights Council’s special representatives have sent a letter to the Indian government. According to them, 52 million voter records have been deleted across 12 states and union territories.

The letter specifically mentions West Bengal, where 9.1 million voters’ names have been removed. Experts report that many individuals have complained about name deletions despite having identification documents.

UN experts have raised questions about the use of artificial intelligence in reviewing voter records. They claim that a lack of transparency and algorithmic bias could affect genuine voters.

It is noteworthy that the Indian government states the voter list revisions comply with national laws. The UN has requested a response from the government, which has not yet been received.
