According to initial investigations by the European Commission, features like autoplay, infinite scroll, and personalized recommendations on Instagram and Facebook compel users to continuously view content. This habit can lead to excessive usage.

Regulators have stated that Meta has failed to assess these risks adequately. Current safety measures, such as screen time controls, have proven ineffective.

The EU has demanded that Meta disable these features by default and make algorithms less engagement-driven. If Meta fails to implement these changes, it could face fines of up to 6% of its global annual revenue.
