Islamabad: (RightNow) Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry has expressed serious concerns over the proposed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police Act. He states that provinces cannot form their own army or police, which violates the constitution.

He mentioned that changes cannot be made to the Police Service of Pakistan rules. Under the proposed law, the authority for appointing the provincial police chief shifts from the federal to the provincial government.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet has approved the draft of the Police Act 2026, granting the provincial government powers including the appointment of the Inspector General. The federal government claims this move violates the constitution.

It is noteworthy that similar changes have been debated in the Sindh and Peshawar High Courts. The federal government has also indicated the possibility of approaching the court.
