Jakarta: (RightNow) The eruption of Indonesia’s Anak Krakatoa volcano has led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights from Jakarta’s main airport. Due to clouds of lava and ash, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta is temporarily closed.

Over 200 domestic and international flights have been canceled or delayed due to the incident. Educational activities in affected areas have also been suspended. Reports of eye irritation and respiratory issues have emerged.

Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has urged the public to remain calm. The agency’s spokesperson advised wearing face masks, protecting eyes, and limiting outdoor activities.

The volcano erupted late Friday night, sending ash clouds 20 thousand feet towards Java and 50 thousand feet towards Sumatra and Banten. Currently, there is no tsunami threat.

It is noteworthy that Anak Krakatoa emerged in the 1920s after the Krakatoa volcano eruption. In 2018, its eruption caused a tsunami, killing over 400 people on the coasts of Java and Sumatra.
