Islamabad: (RightNow) The Senate Committee on Water Resources expressed concern over India’s halt in providing flood data. The committee emphasized the need for a new AI-based river monitoring system.

The meeting revealed that the current flood situation is due to rainfall, with high flood levels recorded at some points in the Chenab River. Meanwhile, low-level floods are observed at Tarbela and Chashma, with water flow normal in most areas.

Authorities forecast heavy rainfall across the country from July 18 to 25. There are also risks of glacial lake outbursts and flash floods, prompting public caution.

The committee was informed that flood data from India is unavailable following the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. The NDMA has established a modern dashboard for glacier monitoring and timely warnings.

It is noteworthy that climate change is increasing risks, making an effective system essential, according to the committee chairman. Warnings were issued for the absence of Punjab and Sindh irrigation secretaries from the meeting.
