UN agencies fear 500 refugees dead as boats capsize near Myanmar coast.
Myanmar: (RightNow) Two boats carrying over 500 refugees capsized near the Myanmar coast. All passengers are feared dead.
United Nations agencies report that these refugees embarked on a dangerous journey seeking a better life from war-torn areas.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the boats departed in late June, mostly carrying Rohingya refugees.
Reports indicate some passengers were from camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. This incident could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis.
It is noteworthy that Rohingya fleeing Myanmar’s Rakhine State have long faced hardships.
